Computing

What is Computing at Broadgreen Primary?

Computing is the new ICT and can be divided into 3 different domains: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy (which includes eSafety).

Computer Science at Broadgreen allows the children to investigate how a computer network works and how algorithms, sequences, selection and variables are used within a range of software. Visual programming languages, such as Scratch, are used to help support and embed these skills.

Information technology is very broad as it involves the creation, organisation and manipulation of digital content in both key stages – digital content could be interpreted as many things from audio to images to film and beyond.

The digital literacy component of the computing curriculum here at Broadgreen ensures children are able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology. It also incorporates a lot of what is referred to as ‘online safety’ – using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly. All children should be taught a range of ways to report any concerns they may have.

KS1

Computer science – Children are given the opportunity to create and debug simple programs

Information technology – Children are taught how to use a range of different technology purposefully.

Digital Literacy – Children are shown how Computing can be used beyond school. They are taught how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.

KS2

Computer science – Children are given the opportunity to design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, as well as being able to use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs. They are taught how to explain how algorithms work and to be able to correct errors.

Information technology – Children are taught how to use different search technologies effectively. They are given the opportunity to be able to use and combine a variety of software.

Digital Literacy - Children will explore different networks and learn all about how the internet works. They are taught how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.
