Year Three -Curator

                                                                                     Autumn Term Class Information

We have a fun packed term of learning ahead of us in Year 3. In Inquiry, we are very excited to be delivering a new integrated humanities approach, 'Opening Worlds', with a focus on developing vocabulary and making meaningful links between history, geography and religion. Our first units will focus on looking at why settlements develop around rivers through studies of the Ancient Egyptians, the River Indus and the Hindu story of Rama and Sita. We will then move on to looking at how mountains interact with what is around them through studies of Ancient Mesopotamia, mountains in geography, and places and stories from the Indus Valley after the half term break.

In English we will explore six units, ‘Folktale Narratives’, ‘Instructional Texts’, 'Writing Explanations', ' Writing Recounts', 'Mystery Narratives' and 'Persuasive Texts'. Alongside learning the craft of the author and writing our own fiction, we will create factual pieces to link with our studies in other subject areas.  We will use various sources as inspiration for planning and writing a series of reports and information texts to, again, link with our Inquiry studies. Our whole class reading for pleasure books this term will be 'Krindlekrax' by Philip Ridley, 'River Stories' by Timothy Knapman, 'Classic Poetry' anthology selected by Michael Rosen (Walker Illustrated Classics series), and 'Everest: The Remarkable Story of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay' by Alexandra Stewart.

In Maths we will continue to work on our Basic Skills, involving number and our times tables, and will be applying our learning to a range of open ended challenges and problem solving tasks. Our topics this term include number and place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and fractions. We will seek opportunities to apply our mathematical skills in other subjects.

In our Science lessons this term we will consider look at forces, with a focus on magnets, and will also complete an investigation into animals, looking at adaptation and classification.

In PSHE we will be looking at the importance of health and wellbeing. In addition, we will look at how to get along with others and devise positive ways to deal with conflict during Anti-Bullying Week. In our unit on families we will consider the importance of these relationships and will look at celebrating diversity.

In P.E, (Tuesdays and Thursdays), we will receive lessons from the EiTC sports coaches who will be introducing us to dance skills and techniques used in team games this term, to help us to improve our balance, co-ordination and stamina.

Our Creative Arts curriculum will involve lots of singing in music and we will begin to look at musical notation and improvisation skills. We will learn drawing techniques in our unit on 'Growing Artists' and will look at painting and mixed media skills in our exciting unit, 'Prehistoric Painting'.

Homework will be set every Friday on Google Classroom (https://classroom.google.com/c/MTUyNDg3NzMzMTc4) with tasks for English (which may also included grammar, punctuation, handwriting, and spelling practice) and Maths being set alongside a home reading book. Completed work can be submitted on the Google Classroom platform. If you have any questions about our curriculum, please don’t hesitate to speak to me (Mrs Lark) n.lark@broadgreenprimary.org.uk  or our TA's, Miss Lee or Miss Charalambous.

Here’s to an exciting term! Thank you for your continued support.
